Performance chips?

For an upgrade are performance chips a waste of time and money?

Re: Performance chips?

I've been meaning to ask this...does that mean you have to have a chip to get a tune, I've been told they can just tune your stock ECU?

They can. But most performance chips will allow you to switch to different tunes. The pros are that you don't have to wait to re-flash the ecu but you also have to reprogram the tune for different octane levels. There are advantages to both. I prefer my tuner. I can make adjustments myself and it gives me another to to play with

Anything from '96 and up don't require a chip for tuning. They can use handheld tuners because they are obdII. Anything older than that has to be chipped. Not sure the cutoff on the older stuff, but I'm guessing '86.

Re: Performance chips?

not sure what I would need different tunes for though? Mine is for a daily driver, I mean I may take it to a track once or twice a year but nothing crazy.

What have you got. The different octane tunes are pretty great. And if it's an auto they can really help the shift points and firmness. I spray nitrous and have to adjust timing for the different shots so I need a tuner. And I love it.

Re: Performance chips?

its mainly stock right now cept for a CAI. I'm getting a shopping list together and just buying it all at once and then having this guy that builds mustang drag cars tune it and port out my stock plenum when I get back. Shopping list so far:
[front 17x9, rear 17x10.5's, Ford Racing handling package]<<--(already purchased, sitting in my room at parents lol)

Magnaflow Tru x X-pipe
Magnaflow Magnapac
02 Sensor Extension/check engine eliminator
Stack Racing Plenum Spacer
Stack Racing 70mm TB
Ford Racing 3.73 gears and install kit
MGW short throw
Steeda Underdrive Pulleys
kinda stuck on what else I want/could gain hp from w/o a turbo/supercharger...not yet anyways lol

Is that the eBay one. It hooks up to your iac. It's just a resistor and fools the computer into thinking your running rich and leans out the a/f mix. Bad idea.

I strongly advise C&L cold air with Diablo Sport tuner. You said you have a cold air, you could probably use it and just get C&L's tuner. It was by far the biggest bang for the buck I did until I got a Whipple. As mentioned above the custom tunes will improve everything even for a daily driver.

PS, I just took off a set of Steeda Under Drive pulleys if your interested. I also have a spanking new pair of BBK long tube stainless steel headers in the box never opened.
