Question 07 GT Long Tube Headers

Men...and Women,

I'm looking into purchasing long tube headers, and as I was talking to my mechanic friend, he said that when he put his headers in his foxbody he had to also change his steering rod because the tubes were too wide and that I should research it for my 07 GT before I order them. SO, with that, has anyone installed long tube headers from Mac had any problems with the installation and any surprises while doing so? Thanks in advance...

Re: 07 GT Long Tube Headers

Interesting, I'll have to take a look at my engine bay and see how much space is in it for where the headers will go. Thanks.

Your 07 has rack and pinion steering. The fox body has a steering box.

The kooks won't hang as low as the fox either. Had them on my 07 and you could not even see them under the car and never had a scraping issue.

Re: 07 GT Long Tube Headers

any reason you want the headers? i know they add a little power. but i thought they were mainly for looks. thing is. you really cant see them in a mustang. or at least in mine you cant

You can gain 15-30 hp with long tubes with a tune. And it's louder because theres no restriction and it flows out a lot better and faster.

Exactly I'm into big sound. Granted some will tell you that after awhile or while traveling long distances that you will get sick of hearing the exhaust and want it off, I on the other hand look forward to the sound difference. I never got sick and tired of the sound when my Lincoln Mark VII was exhausted out. Only now, I have to see if I will get that loud sound with just the headers and the flowmaster mufflers, or do I also need to get an H-pipe with it to get that sound that I want....a deep throaty sound.

I would say get the h pipe along with it that way u are doing everything at the same time. I don't think that anyone gets tired of that pure muscle sound. The 07 engine bays were all setup for the GT500 platform so u will have a lot of room in there.

If you do headers Ur gunna have to get an aftermarket h pipe because the factory one won't work with longtubes

You just answered what I was wondering Many thanks! I know I'll be going with the Mac's longtubes and I've been told not to mix and match due to different fittings with other brands.

My 2 cents ... Get some great sounding cat backs (SLP) in my opinion and invest and put your money and effort into Ford Racing Hot Rod cams !

Re: 07 GT Long Tube Headers

Just had shorty ford racing headers installed today on my 07 and was wondering how long it takes for that smell to go away? i had the headers wrapped for heat purposes, does that stuff contribute to the smell as well.

A smell, huh?!? Did you get ceramic headers? And how is the sound with the shorties? I get mine put on this week.

If they are wrapped, I doubt they are ceramic.

What does it smell like?

Re: 07 GT Long Tube Headers

they are the standard stainless steel ford racing headers. i would have had ceramic wrapped as well. and since you can not really see these i wasn't looking for appearance. the smell was kind of chemical like. maybe a glue
or resin smell. it only lasted a few hours and was gone. i'm told it was a coating or such from the factory or maybe even the new gaskets. if you google it its a pretty common thing. overall i'm very happy with the shorty's, nice sound and maybe a little more torque. i'm replacing the muffers next with some type of axle backs.

Why shorties and not LTs?

The macs arnt that bad. Would be nice if they still made an h pipe for their lt's. I'm not big on the sound of the prochamber. If you do cams plan on doing longtubes to see the best gain out of them!

I went with the shortys as the install would easier not having to cut into my xpipe and all. I know what most say about long vs short and all that but after doing alot research and talking with my wrench at the dealership going with shortys seemed to be the approach that alot of 05 and up gt owners take and the one he suggested.
