I understand some need a tune and some don't. But Why? What is the difference between CAI's that cause this, is it higher cfm?

Part 2 - if you tune with a cai that didn't require a tune will it perform like a cai that required a tune in the first place?

Re: CAI Tune?

The CAI's that don't require a tune are the same size as the stock intake, measured across the mass air flow sensor. They don't flow much more air than the stock unit, so they don't require a tune.
C&L sells a kit that has a restrictor in it. The theory is that you put the intake on and run without a tune. Then after the car gets a tune, the restrictor can be removed.
I know its a lot of money, but get a combo pack that includes the intake and an SCT tuner. AM sells a nice one.

A tune will get the most out of each mod and could give you a lot more power.

Re: CAI Tune?

Its a waste of money to do just the cai. Save your money and get the package deal bud,it will be worth it. The tune is where it is at.

Ok, I had a KN cai and just got an SCT tuner. So now it sounds like I should get a different cai?

If you already have k and n's cai then your pretty good. They are not the very best but I wouldn't ditch that one and pay another 250 for a jlt cause the gains wouldn't be as. Noticeable IMO

Re: CAI Tune?

I don't think anything is wrong with the K&N CAI, especially if it's your only mod or so.

So far it's K&n cai, flowmaster 40 axle back and SCT tuner. So what's the next logical step?

Re: CAI Tune?

Ouf! The next logical step? That's a good, but really subjective question!

I don't know if others will agree, but if it's power that you want, I'd recommend Steeda charge motion delete plates. They're not super expensive, they install in a couple hours and they work great. Keep in mind you'll need to retune your computer with them.

Rear gears are also a good investment, but they are more expensive to install. They also need a retune.

Another option is a set of lowering coil springs. They may improve handling, stance, traction and even gas milage.

Good luck!

I like the loudness. They have drone if driving slow and in a high gear eg 45 mph and in 5 th. That doesn't really bother me at highway speed it's fine.

Thanks for the advice, mine came with 3:55, I drive everyday, so I don't want to put 4:10 in. I was starting to think handling since the next power jump would be SC.

This requires a custom tune for the SCT, right?

Yes, charge motion delete plates require a new custom tune that you can load on your car computer via an SCT or another tuning device.

I haven't ride a 40 series Flowmaster equipped 05-09 Mustangs, but you can find some video clips on YouTube. IMO, it sounds throtty and deep when the rest of the exhaust is stock. I don't know about other combinations because, as always, the final sound result depends on the setup.

I read that some people were even able to mid mount 40 series Flowmaster. It appears it was a tight fit.

Re: CAI Tune?

Here is a link to a thread on another forum.

2008 Mustang GT mid mounted flowmasters 40 series - Ford Mustang Forums

There is a video that explain how 40 series Flowmasters were mounted in an uncommon place. They are not totally mid mounted.

Re: CAI Tune?

Here is another video of 40 series Flowmaster on a 05-09 Mustang, but this time mounted as axlebacks on a Bullitt edition. It's probably much easier to install.

Flowmasters was a piece of cake to install. I'll try and get a sound bit posted.

Silversky545, this is probably how your Mustang would sound if you add an off-road x-pipe.

Hope you enjoy!

Re: CAI Tune?

I've never heard the Detroit Rocker cams in person, but they sound fantastic in the Brenspeed videos. Plus, I'm sure they are top-quality. It seems they are good competitors of the Ford Racing Hot Rod cams. Good choice!
