The short ones are stronger so you won't have to take it off

Ya instead of asking how to get your car ready to get abused at a auto scratcher, just hand wash it or at the very least a touchless car wash

You can get a 3inch carbon fiber one like mine off eBay, no joke one of the best things I've bought! I work at the wash (autoglass) and I've run him through hundreds of times, never a problem, no need to take off.

Does the short ones still pick up radio stations or are they just for looks? I listen to a lot of ball games on the radio an don't want to get xm or any thing like that.

Yup yup!
Still get all of my favorite stations, you should be good as long as you already get good reception, quality might fade a little due to how powerful the radio signals from the station are, but I haven't had any problems

I just took a ford antenna and cut it to the length i wanted. and put the ball thing on the top of it using strong glue. It's as flexible as the one that was on my car

Check out Craven speed. I just bought a solid 3 inch black billet antenna from there. You will loose some reception but it won't break
