6 Speed 'Stangs

Howdy Forums,

Just recently got my first Mustang (and my personal first car) which I'll be paying back on a loan to my Old Man!

I absolutely love everything about my Screamin' Yellow 06, but the one thing that kind of irks me would be the gearing. I prefer a 6 speed, but I'm not against a 5 speed.

I don't need to go any faster than I am now, as I never plan to drag race my Stang (and build up damage.) Now, would it be more cost effective to put in a 6 speed transmission, or a slightly higher gear ratio 5, for that smooth luxury feel?

Also, if anyone could estimate a cost, it'd be much appreciated! Thanks!
Chris

Not sure I understand what you are trying to accomplish with a 6 speed. Higher gear ratio would make the car quicker. The 6th gear would lower your rpm's while cruising at highway speed, but it's below 1:1 just like 5th.

Re: 6 Speed 'Stangs

its not about the number of gears but the gearing of the ones you have~ at least speed based up to a point. The 6 speeds are closer together generally so it gives you better acceleration but you have to shift more~ and that kills performance as well.

The 6 speeds really are not THAT different in gearing and the final drive is generally not that much different than 5th in a 5 speed~

^yeah. The top gear ratio is what defines your rpm on the highway. If you wanted luxary feel... u got the wrong car. If you want lower rpm on the highway you vould look at the t56 magnum xl trans. Its got a .50 6th gear. But unless your making big torque numbers its not gonna be happy untill 85-90mph. If you have a v6 car I wouldn't touch the trans...

Getting a new trans is a big project, and as you said if you are still paying off a loan then you probably won't have the money for it, so it would be best to stick with it... Cause realisticaly the only time you are going to need that 6th gear is at 80+ on the freeway, my dad rarely goes into 6th gear in his corvette.
Just to give you an idea of the cost check out the link. (Just remember, you will probably want someone to install it will add a lot more onto the cost)

my 2012 V6 is about 1900 rpm at 75mph in 6th but some of that is thanks to the 2.73 rear gears, I am sure the trans final drive is not very low (probably .6X something). My 03 cobra final drive is .68 with 3.55's and is about 1800 at 60ish-mph if I remember correctly

Re: 6 Speed 'Stangs

Installing a 6sp CAN BE an excellent upgrade, but only for particular apps. It also requires other expensive mods. I have done(5) 6sp swaps and I have a 6sp in my 09 GT and love it, but for you it is just beyond your needs. If you were to do it with new parts, with needed additional upgrades you are looking at a cost up wards of $6,000.00

Re: 6 Speed 'Stangs

If you don't care about performance and just want lower rpm's at highway speeds, the cheapest option would be to put lower gears in the rear end. A swap would be less than $900.

Agree. Just out in a 2.73 gear set.
