With the cost I wouldn't unless you had high miles, but just stick with accel or MSD not those 400 dollar ones

Re: Coil pack??

Several of my friends have tried aftermarket COPs and all have been disappointed. One friend tried Granatelli's then Accel, then MSD, all worked for a while, then he would get a misfire and a Check Engine Light. The representatives from Paxton/Vortech told him that the stock Ford units are the best out there. They just aren't very pretty.

Re: Coil pack??

I used MSD Coils packs and no problem at all, actually felt a little difference also.

I used accel's. They work great. No problems and a slight increase in power

Stock coils may be just as good, but to say accell & msd are junk is totally wrong.

I liked my MSD wires on my 4.6 dohc, never had a problem, I couldn't imagine then not being able to design a coil pack

I would put either one on my car over a stock replacement. But sofar I haven't had too. My 5.0 has a msd coil and all my bikes have accell. Both are very good companies.

Re: Coil pack??

Stock Ford coil packs are the best, no advanage with others except in the mind. When used in a DD , Accel and MSD have had problems. Just take a look at big HP s197's at the race track and you will see Ford coil pk's.

Re: Coil pack??

From my experience it seems the aftermarket coils are experiencing issues mostly on supercharged cars. I have used other MSD products, wires, spark boxes, etc. with no issues.

Re: Coil pack??

And again I'll say it: I have the MSD Coil packs, and have had absolutely NO problem and NO issues at all.

Agreed. Not much to be had if anything at all out of coils until fine tuning and HP come into play.

Re: Coil pack??

My first post so I don't want to come off as a commercial - I agree there are a lot of choices when it comes to picking the best coils for your 3v engine. It's crazy to say they are all created equal. Likewise as the past owner of Paxton Superchargers (who merged with Vortech a few years back) I can tell you first hand we have done extensive testing on the coils and invariably always saw an increase with the Granatelli coils.

Recently on a new Coyote engine with a Vortech at 7lbs they witnessed a 20hp increase and 18 ft/lbs of torque with no more than a GMS coil swap.

That is a valid opinion - if it is not broken don't fix it. Or in this case you are saying if it did not break last time why make it better. This is the aftermarket; we are all about making things better than stock and beefing up our motors, suspension and anything else we can think of. If your driveshaft never broke there would no reason to put in a better one. I guess until it snapped at the track at a critical time.

I agree lots of enthusiasts are make great power with stock coils but many more are making more power and have the added piece of mind knowing their coils are superior to factory output
