Check fuel cap watning?

It's came on last night. Won't go away. And of course I've checked the fuel cap. If I hit reset it comes back a few seconds later with a annoying beep. What's going on?

Newer vehicles have a system that makes sure fuel vapors in the tank get routed through an emission filter. If your fuel cap isn't closed properly it will throw a code. It will be some sort of emission component. I haven't dealt with those in too long to remember details though, sorry.

I've checked the fuel cap pretty good. I don't think it's hurting anything but it's annoying as hell

You'll probably have an engine code show up soon. All this system does is keep fuel vapors out of the air. Not a big deal.

Re: Check fuel cap watning?

Maybe you have a defective cap. If you have a buddy with the same cap you could try his.

Re: Check fuel cap watning?

do you smell any vapors around the tank area, there may be a hole in the filler neck or something~ you can try filling it up 100%, removing the negative battery cable for a bit (few minutes) and tab the brakes after you remove it to drain the system.

Plug it back up, let it SIT (do not crank it) for a few minutes (15-20) then crank it and let it sit for 15 min. See if it comes back on.

This happened to me also upon my first drive after winter hibernation. Here is what made mine go away. Make sure both your rubber o-ring on the fuel cap, and the sealing surface where this ring seals against the filler tube are absolutely spotless! I found a very small piece of lint on my cap seal. Clean the seal off with your clean fingers (do not use a cloth or paper towel) and apply a thin film of silicone lube (not silicone sealant!). Then, make sure the inside surface of the filler neck where the seal rides is equally spotless. I applied some silicone lube here also. I reset the light via the setup menu. Has not come back on since! Obviously, it does not take much of a vacuum leak to piss off the computer!

I've tried a new cap. I've tried resetting the codes, (worked for 2 days). I'll try gas treatment next. It's driving me crazy lol

Why don't you just get the cods read and figure out from there. My old 96 had a charcoal canister failure. Light came on all the time. I got good at deactivating it. 1000$ fix for a problem that shouldn't exist at all.

There's not actually a check engine light but when I do the reset thing (unplug battery, wait a few hours plug it in and let it run) it goes away. And it's not very consistent sometimes it's instantly after I turn it off (if I hit the reset button it goes away) but than sometimes it's an hour. The ford dealership was no help at all without a $60 fee to "look" at it

They make fuel cap pressure testers you might want to try one of those to test your cap

First: Go to an autoshop or order a new cap online and replace it.
Sometimes caps are not placed properly and this will release gases trigging the emission faulty code.

Second: Use a tuner such as SCT or Diablo sport or any tuner that would reset ctm codes,
Third: Clear code, ride your car for about 1-2 miles, at this point no code should be present or would display since the emission gases are being conceled.

Hope this helps

It may not be the gas cap. It may be a defective charcoal canister. The fumes from the gas tank are routed to this canister, stored, and either routed to the engine to be burned, or to the gas tank.

If you over fill your gas tank (known as "topping off"), this will cause the charcoal canister to fail, as the fuel will slosh in the tank and flow into the canister.
