Vinyl vs. Painted stripes - Longevity & Appearance

Hey guys! So I pulled the trigger and ordered some silver vinyl stripes for my black 06 GT from AM, and I'm thinking about returning them... first of all - no place in my town is willing to install them. I have to drive 2 hours down south and pay $250 for installation (not too bad, but the distance sucks).

I talked to a professional pinstriper, and he told me that he does every color, excluding silver, because the silver stripes will fade and chip away within 12-18 months, and basically look like ****.

It looks like the way to go is getting them painted... should I stick it out with vinyl, or just blow the cash to get the stripes painted?

I'm pretty conflicted right now...

Thanks guys.

i got matte black stripes, and those supposedly last for a good 7+ years if they're only supposed to last for 1.5 yrs, then i would go ahead and get them painted on.

i had white vinyl stripes at one point on another stang...they browned after 2 years then when i removed them i had of course a paint discoloration from the sun beating the uncovered paint all that time. if you know you're gonna want the color combo for years to come paint it, but if you think your taste might change like most do. i'd do the vinyl because you can always correct paint later

I like the vinyl, get 8 year vinyl, it last long will not discolor and comes off easy if you want to change color. They can be bought for around $100.

Had my stripes for 4 years never a problem with the edges, stay away from Gold, and Silvers,

I went with vinyl on my first mustang and I looked great! But... It wasn't long before ever stripe corner was coming off. Not due to me picking at it, but just wear and tear from washing or wind. It ended up all coming off when a car hit my in the ***, I then painted them on in a shiny finish and it looked greater! I would go with paint because you won't have to worry about blowing it off or it starting to come up. Good luck!

A good rule of thumb is between 450 and 650 depending on what you want. 400 or lowering isn't good becuz that means its gonna be as cheap as you pay.. Not a very good stripe job for lower numbers. But too high and it's overpriced.

I was quoted $1500-2000 from a few different shops in my area.

I think I'm going to just pass on the vinyl stripes - in the long run, they sound like too much trouble (for silver, at least).

Gonna look into more shops and see if I can get a paint job for under $1000.

Hope you don't regret that $1000 paint job, that's too cheap to clear everything.

Re: Vinyl vs. Painted stripes - Longevity & Appearance

This worries me as I just picked up my 05 GT black, with off silver stripes on it. The fellow who sold it to me said he just re did them as the originals were fading and cracking (okay so maybe 7 years..). Hmmm....
