Get my first Mustang tomorrow.

This will be my first sports car since I sold my 04 srt back in 2008. I'm getting a light blue (hoping the color grows on me, wife loves it) 2005 Mustang GT bone stock 5spd with 24k miles. The car is in outstanding condition and snagging it for 15k. Anyways I know a cai and tuner seems to be the best first mod I noticed that the ford racing cai is not legal in California, since we will be living there soon I was wondering if this was the case for all Cai's. Also do longtubers delete the cat? This will be a semi daily driver and want to keep it legal. Thank for the help and I look forward to chatting with y'all.

There are CAIs that aren't legal in California but then there are a few that are legal for example the BBK CAI does not require a tune and has a carb number. Also, longtubes do not delete cats. The cats are in the midpipe. You can either do a catted midpipe with longtubes or you can do an offroad midpipe which has no cats. If you want to keep it legal then you are going to have to do a catted midpipe. But technically longtubes are illegal in California. But with cats you will still pass smog. As far as I know there are not "legal" longtubes.

Thanks! That kinda sucks, what about shorties and a axle back? My goal is really only about an extra 40-50 whp, I don't want it to be to much for the wife.

Just do longtubes with a catted midpipe and you should be fine

Won't work and still illegal. A catted mid pipe only supports 2 cats. CA state emissions are way to strict

Well ya I know it's still technically illegal but all he has to worry about is passing smog which with longtubes and a catted midpipe it's still possible to pass. I passed with longtubes and catted midpipe.

Maybe a throttle body. Tune it, charge.

The Ford Racing CAI is absolutely CARB legal. http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com...m-9603-gtb.htm
Get that with a tune.

I don't think 320 is a realistic goal staying NA in California. Not many more power adders after that are CARB legal.

Ohh. Well my smog place didn't even do a visual. Lol. But I have the Pypes LTs with a kooks Catted x pipe at the time when I passed. But since I swapped out the Catted x and did a Pypes offroad h pipe. I have to have the car smogged in August though

This is a myth. We had a discussion thread here months ago where I posted dyno after dyno showing shorties provide SLIGHTLY less HP than Longtubes in the upper range and almost identical under peak.

ok? lol i was just telling this guy to go with long tubes instead of Shortys, IMO Shortys are a waste of money, and pointless, and no matter how many dynes u use, they will
never all be the same.

---------- Post added at 01:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:09 PM ----------

cant go wrong with long tubes, u will deff see a power gain , but not so much with short tubes

And you can't go wrong with shorties. If not all dynos are the same, the same is to be said for long tubes. Long tubes are better, yes but not by a huge margin. Your opinion doesn't change the fact that shorties ABSOLUTELY do give great gains.

As for the axel back you mentioned... That should/will be mostly for sound and looks. They don't do much to up your power goals... And remember many of them aren't 50 state legal either. Enjoy the ride!

Garden grove. Are pulleys worth it? I'm seeing about 10whp there, I find that hard to believe.

There good for 5-10 HP. They would help especially with more supporting mods
