Illegal? Smoked tails?

Hey. So I realize it's illegal but what I want to know is how much trouble is it really going to cause me. Am I going to be getting pulled over every time a cop sees me?
Thanks!

I really appreciate the input! So next question is blackout covers or just buy tint?

The covers don't look quite as good but they ARE removable so if you did get pulled over you could just pop them off.

Mines perfect with vht i feel, just need to smooth it out from the drip look when you're up close.

It all depends what town you are in or if the cop is looking for a reason to pull you over. Some towns will stop you for your tint but most don't care.

As long as it reflects red and can be seen during the day without lighting up, it should be legal. The law does not state what shade of red, so tint is just a darker red.

If someone rear ends you and gets seriously hurt, a lawyer will tear you a new one.

Still about an even case. Its said its always their fault for not leaving a three+ car following distance for a good reaction time.

I can answer this for you. I had my other stang with tinted tail lights I never got a ticket until I went to Austin. You will get what they call fix a ticket. Take a pic with the tint on then take a pic with the tint off send in $10 and the pics that's it. I used Lens Tint on mine. I never had any problems for 6 months with it tinted until I went to Austin.

It depends on how strict the cops in your area are. For instance, on an older mustang I used to have, the headlights were HID's and the taillights were tinted a little, and I never got pulled over or even followed for that matter. There have been some times where they look at them a little suspiciously, but they never come after me. I guess its a gamble, sometimes you may be caught, other times you won't.

Keep it smoked, not blacked out. And leave the reverse lights alone - if they aren't tinted the tails look more like oem just better

As others mentioned above, usually you're okay as long as you're driving is reasonable. Most of our AM cars have some type of smoked factory or Raxiom tail light and we have never issues getting them inspected or driving around the local roads.

I say go for it!

Interesting comments!

I bought some smoked Raxioms from AM. They looked great on my black car. Then after 9 months I get pulled over, not for speeding, for for my taillights. He said they were tinted and therefore illegal.
Then when I complained about it in this forum, I get a bunch of, we'll you should know that already and AM admitted that they are pretty much illegal everywhere.
So now you suggest them. You really should have a comment on your web site that they may be illegal in most states. I probably would have still bought them and taken a chance, but I would been informed that I was taking a chance.

Law states anything obstructing the view of your tailights to any other person, driver, ect is illegal therefore tint.. Obstructing the view of your stock tailights (wether it be VHT or new housing) is illegal and intended for offload use only.
