Need advice...

I currently have a 2005 Mustang GT convertible that I purchased last November. The car has a built stroker motor and the STS Twin-Turbo kit. I have spent an enormous amount of money getting the car to run right, and now that it is, I need to spend a lot more to fix the appearance, such as the peeling clearcoat, damaged upholstery and stripes that have started to curl. But, it's crazy fast, and who wouldn't love a fast drop-top?

Here's the rub- the guy I bought the car from wants it back. To sweeten the deal, he is proposing a trade. He has a pristine 2003 Mach 1 that is completely stock, except for the 4.10 gears in the rear. It has fewer miles on it, and it is in MUCH better overall condition. It also releases me from the 10K I still owe him on the Turbo car. The determining factor may be the fact that convertible is NOT smog legal here in California....

Am I crazy for considering the trade?

how much cash have you dumped into getting it to run right? and How much did you pay the guy for the car? That's a hard choice right there.... if it were me he would have to offer the mach 1 and cash!

I have a couple of grand into the car so far, and I need to spend at least another $5000 to fix the paint and interior. But, I still owe him, so the Mach 1 and cash is not an option. The only thing that is really holding me back is the fact that I have always wanted a power adder car, and now I have one. But, with my financial situation, I will likely not have the funds to fix the convertible any time soon. And.... the Mach 1 is black. I told myself I would never again have a black car in Bakersfield, the dust capitol of the world.

Id get the Mach and be payment free. This one seems like a money pit project.
Mach's are sweet cars.

Well it depends is if the car you like is worth keeping and fixing. I honesty don't like convertibles at all, and the fact that you still owe money, the car you said isn't CAli legal so you have to find a place were to get it smogged all raises flags. Get the mach and you won't owe anything and have a car that is running straight And will hold its value higher and longer than a 05 gt. plus it's a 4v and IMO sounds better than a 3v:

After weighing the pros and cons, I think I will go with everyone's advice and become a Mach 1 owner. I'll keep you posted- thanks to everyone that helped. This is the best Mustang forum there is.

Instead of dropping another $5000 for interior
And paint, you can add a SC or turbo kit in the Mach.

heck yes...and considering he'd let you out of the 10k you'd owe him, you're basically recovering 15k back...

Good choice on the mach 1, I'd drive it for a few months, save some cash. Buy a beater and put the mach in the garage for safe keeping!

Can't argue with 32 MPG and the coldest damn A/C there is. I just have to check my MAN card at the door.

My son says I need to put an epic wing on the trunk lid, and a fart can muffler. With a 1.6 liter engine making about 42 HP, neither would do me any good. I measure it's 0 to 60 MPH time with a calendar......

OK, I did it. The Mach 1 is now in my garage! The car is in much better shape than I remembered. It has only 43,000 miles on it. The mufflers have been changed to Flowmasters and it has 4.10 gears installed, but otherwise its completely unmolested. This car suits me FAR better than the '05. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Here it is, have not yet had a chance to clean it up. The more I drive it, the more I like it!

As much as I do like the Mach 1 , I wouldn't trade my 06 gt for one.

Under any other circumstances, I would agree with you. However, my '05 was beat to crap. I would have blown my entire budget just fixing what was wrong with it. With the Mach 1, all of my money will go toward fun stuff.

Thanks, everyone. Its kinda funny how much smaller this car feels, after 6 years of owning S197s. It fits much better in my garage.
