True the flexplate is the autos equivalent. Same basic function more or less, but it does not undergo direct coupling and friction so it is less heavy duty that a Fly wheel.
Light fly wheels will ruin street manners and are only good for quick acceleration in racing like road racing. Drag racing usually uses heavy ones to get better 60ft times.
