It's all just a numbers game when buying a car from a dealer. If they aren't making money on the car they're selling they're going to try to make it on your trade and vice versa. But selling it outright is how you are going to get the most money out of it. The only problem with that is lowballers and tire kickers. It will take some time to sell it. The best option if you are trading it is to take it to Carmax and take the paperwork over to the original dealer so they can match the price and you will also get the tax savings.
