Automatic Shifter Loose

For as long as I've had it, my '04 GT automatic has had a shifter that feels weirdly loose. When I put it into D, for instance, I have to jiggle it a bit to make it lock into place. This does not seem right at all, but this is my first Mustang, or Ford for that matter, so I don't know if this is normal or not!

If it's not normal, I'm wondering how expensive and/or difficult it would be to fix. It's annoying, but I can live with it unless/until it gets significantly worse.

My shifter cable does that. I need a new one. It's fried in the middle from sitting on the stock h-pipe. I routed it away from it for now. But its on my bucket list. With a new Bullitt handle too

Kegels.

I apologize that I can't actually help. I just couldn't miss a golden opportunity when someone complains about it being loose with the D.

Now that you mention it though...but I guess I should take that to a different forum.

Haha sorry. In all seriousness though, I'd check the cable like Mosified suggested, or maybe get the console apart and see if there's something loose in the bracket. A bolt or something might've just worked itself loose, considering the car is 10 years old.

Just squeeze under there with a flashlight. Its exactly in the middle on the loop. The outer layer has play since its loose and on its way out the door.

if you take the consol out and pop that white clip u can use your shifter like a slap shifter and drive more like a manual

My 06 was the same when I bought it, didn't pay much attention to it. On one service visit to get my oil change they topped my fluids, my tranny was low on oil.
When I got it back the shifter was stiffen again, not sure if the low oil was the cause of it but did help
