Horsepower Ratings

I was wondering why the Mustangs are rated to have more horsepower than they actually do. What I mean is I have an 08 GT that is stock. The horsepower that is on the sticker says is 300 horsepower but in actually it only has 265 horsepower. Thats a loss of 35 horsepower. I think if Ford make a claim of producing 300 horsepower thats what it should be. Does anyone know why they do this.

It's called drivetrain loss. The 300 horsepower you're talking about is at the crank. The 265 horsepower your getting is at the wheels, after the power has gone through the transmission, driveshaft, and rear end.

The engine produces 300 horsepower, so they are right in what it makes. You can thank your transmission, driveshaft, and rear differential for taking 15% of it before it's to the ground.

A tune and CAI will NEVER yield 30 or 40 hp on a stock 3v 4.6.

A dyno tune and a cold air won't push you to 290?

My cold air, 93 tune and x pipe put me at 300....Take the x pipe off at about 287-290...

While this subject is open here I have an 05 with a procharger stage 2 with full exhaust at 9 psi. Do old at 450hp....does this sound good? And what can I expect at 15 plus new intake manifold? Not sure if I'm ready for the jump.

Thats with older cars and ones that get all gummed up on the inside. Maintain a car properly and it'll be fine.

I want to, but I also wanna wait to see what the aftermarket comes out with for the new ones. There is a bit of a coolness factor of having a sleeper like mine though. At least in my opinion lol

Thanks for all the information on this subject. Now I have a different question but same topic. The engine puts out 300 horsepower. Then we lose 15% through drivetrain etc. Now I understand that going with underdrive pullies helps free up 8-10 horsepower. My question is how much horsepower can we gain at the rear wheels if we have a one piece drive shaft. I'm sure we're losing horsepower to the wheels through a 2 piece drive shaft.

By lightening up the driveline you will pick up a few since it's less power needed to turn everything. The actual number doesn't really matter, all that matters is how it performs and makes you faster.
