5R55s Question

For a 2010 GT automatic, I've noticed that if I'm cruising down the highway at 65-70 mph, if I let off the gas I noticed that the transmission is either downshifting to 4th gear, or the toque converter is unlocking, and when I step back on the accelerator to speed up, the car then upshifts, or locks the converter again. Just wondering if this is considered normal operation? I purchased the car used, and I believe it's been doing it all along. I just went through some holiday traffic on the highway, and it just seems that for such a small speed increase/decrease, this seems like an awful lot of shifting. Plus, you would think that if you're accelerating that the transmission would wait a little before upshifting, as I'm increasing my speed. The upshift is almost immediate.

Read through some 5r55s tsbs. They are known to flare and lose gears and whatnot. I would readtrhough them and see if any of them are like what you are experiencing

Thanks for the quick response! I have read quite a few articles and such regarding this transmission. Bad servo/solenoid packs, servo bore issues. I'm not sure what you mean by "flaring". It doesn't slip, and if you "get on it" the shifting is quite stiff. But this shifting issue (which may not be an issue at all), and the fact that when accelerating hard, such as getting on the highway it seems to shift to 4th and 5th gear simultaneously, again this may be considered normal operation. The thought of taking it to a dealership and being told that it will cost $$$$ just to check it out is silly when I may be able to find someone who has first hand experience with these models.

Well what I do know from my delve into servo bore info from my v6 is if you have a problem with 5 you would have it also with 2nd. So I think you are good in the servo bore department. It could be something as simple as a band adjustment? Might not be a problem at all though, transmissions are confusing lol

They are confusing! lol...Especially when run by a computer. I've had the fluid and the filter changed, and the mechanic, whom I trust, told me that everything looked fine. No burnt fluid or anything like that. The car only has 42000 miles on it, but I've seen that these transmissions can fail very early in their service life. Yeah, I know I should stop worrying about it.

Yeah I wouldn't worry until something gets worse or that lovely overdrive light flashes at you

Sounds like you're speaking from experience...lol. From what I've read, it almost sounds like it's inevitable!! That's what concerns me about all this seemingly unnecessary shifting going on. More wear and tear than the design is able to handle.

I got a 2010 tranny put in after mine went out...pretty sure Ford fixed the issue for 2010. It's not listed in the TSB

That's the best news I've heard in a long time!!!! I've really been concerned about all the things I've read on line about it. If I had a choice, I would've gone with a manual trans, but when buying used...thanks for letting me know!
