Is it all in my head? 5w30 oil made the motor quieter?

My 4.6, like all of your's, makes that great "tick tick tick" sound. Especially noticeable with the windows down and next to a median when you roll to a start, or kinda lug it a little bit when going around a corner. Being a 01 GT owner for many years I've gotten used to it, so much in-fact, that I was WORRIED when I couldn't hear it. Here's the story.

I was walking the isles of O'rielys at the oil change specials looking at the tags on the front of the racks. Saw the Mobil 1 5w20 on the tag and picked up the jug right above it, bought it, and then did the change. After the oil change I went out to drive the car a bit and there's a median that I always pass to leave my street. At this median the "Ticking/knocking/whisk" sound always reverberates off of the ground up to your ears. This time, however, it was noticeably quieter.

Obviously the first thing I did when I got back home was waited 30 minutes and then checked the oil level. My thought process was your car ticks and knocks bad when you have low oil, so since mine went away I had too much. Once I saw the level was fine I checked the jug and sure enough somebody but 5w30 in the 5w20 spot.

Don't get me wrong, the sound is still there. Sorry guys but 5w30 isn't magic or anything. But it's so much quieter you can hardly hear it unless you are listening for it. So, is it all in my head or does a slightly thicker oil really make the mod motors quite down a bit?

Interesting! I'll have to try this. Last time I checked RP wasn't too much more that the other synthetics. Is this still the case?

Try the RP and don't use Lucas that's for motors over 200,000 I won't ever use that stuff in my cars. Just use the RP you'll be good!

What did? Any 5w30 oil, Lucas oil stabilizer, or royal purple? :p

Also what's wrong with amsoil and RP? Over priced?

I just spray about 5 cans of WD-40 into it and it's good to go . On a serious not I use RP because it seems to be the best in my opinion.

I hear that RP makes engines leak oil really quick. Can anyone prove or disprove this? How long have you been running RP?

^ Never heard that. Quite the contrary. I don't use it as I drank the Mobil 1 kool aid many years ago and have no reason to switch.
