Water pump

Generally when a water pump is on it's last legs you will notice coolant leaking from the weep hole on it. Very noticeable, if its leaking you will know.

In terms of sound water pumps sometimes make a ticking sound. Don't confuse the 4.6's "natural" ticking sounds with it though.

Lastly, since the bearing inside the pump is almost always what goes bad on a water pump you may hear a whine that's typical with bad bearings.

Water pumps don't typically just go out without warning, but as with with all things mechanical they certainly can.

Good luck man.

The engine whines. It kind of sounds supercharged but it's not. He whines in neutral, going down the road at speed and when it's just at an idle.

Yeah a bad alternator defiantly makes a whine sound. If it does it at idle we can rule out trans or rear end gear whine. Does the whine get louder as the engine Rpms increase?

With the engine idling are you able to decide that it's the alternator? If you place a long screw driver on the alternator and put your ear up to the other end of the screw driver the sound should resonate up through the screw driver. That will help you to identify that as the problem.

If you're really feeling brave you could remove the accessory belt and manually spin the pulleys. You'll be looking for which one whines but also if any of them seem off balance or hard to spin. Furthermore, check to see if your belt is in good shape.

Just a formality here, but have you done any car audio recently? A bad ground will most defiantly cause a whine to be played through the speakers. Sounds like it's coming from the engine bay though.

I'm leaning towards alternator too but it wouldn't hurt to be sure.

Belt is in good shape and I just replaced the 4 idler pulleys to make sure it wasn't those..it does make a whine noise with the screw driver up to it and yes the whine goes later as rpms go up. Let's say it is drive train how would you check it?

Well if you were able to hear the whine by putting the screw driver on the alternator then that sounds like your problem.

Driveline noise would only be apparent when you are moving. Since you hear the noise at idle, and the driveline isn't moving at idle, only the engine, we can rule out gear whine, u joints, etc.

It really sounds like your alternator is on its last leg

2nd and 5th, huh?

At idle, can you get the sound to go away by pushing in the clutch?

Is it loud enough to capture the sound on video?

Well good news, we can rule out clutch noise since you don't have one!

Like Travis said, does it get louder when you rev it in park. If so, I'd feel very confident in telling you it's the alternator, given what I already know.

You can always take the belt off the motor and start it. If the sound goes away it's gotta be the alternator. Don't let it run too long though, no belt means no water pump.

Not as loud as when your driving down the road...it is barely noticeable when in park and revved...in fact you have to do it three or four times to hear it but going down the road it's super loud...you can hear it over exhaust and road noise

Ok I'll do that later and see what happens...second gear acceleration is where it goes the loudest and it grows with the rpms then isn't heard until at an even speed going down the road.

Once you address the fan issue and decide if that's your problem of not I have a few more ideas I've been thinking about. We're not gonna leave you hanging.

If you can get a video of the sound we could probably nail it right off the bat.

Yeah. You can definitely hear some whine on decel. It fades as soon as be touches the gas but its still there.. Over-ear headphones are how I heard it.

There is a pretty definite whine there on acceleration, magnified on decel.

And we covered that In our emails. Switching overdrive off doesn't effect the whine, but shifting to neutral makes it almost go away.

He told me he was gonna take his alternator to autozone to have it tested. It checked out so he said he was gonna run by a mechanic to see what he thought.

Haven't heard from him since. Must of gotten it figured out

Said it is most likely a transmission issue. He wasn't 100% certain. I'm looking into the amp theory of not being grounded right but I doubt this is the case. Figured it was worth a shot though.
