random engine miss

my 06 gt has developed a miss, this only happens if it idles for 20-30 minutes, it will be idling smooth and then all the sudden it will sound like the drivers side bank is dead out the exhaust, at that point it will do this back and forth cutting in and out every 10 seconds or so as long as it idles, when its doing this and you start to drive at very low acceleration it sounds ok but from around 1200 to 3500 rpm's the left bank sounds dead and has very low power, after it revs above 3500 rpm the power is back and its smooth until the rpms come back down and this may last any where from a mile to 20 miles and then it will go back to running perfectly normal, it does not log any fault codes and the check engine light doesn't come on during the issue. it is a 5 speed, the only mods are a muffler delete and a k&n air filter, I have swapped the k&n out with a factory filter, cleaned the maf with no improvement, I am about to change the plugs soon, it has 130,000 miles on it and I don't know if the plugs have ever been changed as I have only owned this one for a couple of months, I am also new to the 3 valves and vct so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why is it idling for that long?

That sucks. Just turn the car off if it doesn't move for that long.

He's asking for advice on the misfire, not his driving habits lol. Let's just focus on the task at hand.

OP, Before I did a basic tune up my car would do the same thing. It would make a "plop" sound and it would actually shake the motor slightly. Plugs, seafoam, fuel filter, air filter, good too go.

Thanks I appreciate the advice. I'm off work later this week and will take care of the tune up.

You will need a 9/16 plug socket if u have the stock plugs in it.

Oh shoot it's an 06. You're gonna want to do a lot of research before you tackle the plugs on that beast.

I highly recommend hitting up Travis with a pm and ask him for some advice. He just recently tackled it and had everything turn out perfect. Whatever his methods were that's the way you're gonna want to do it lol.

Ok thanks guys. I've been doing some reading on them and it looks like they are more prone to trouble during replacement then my 5.4 2v in my expedition.

Its not that bad took me 45 min to do. I have been a mechanic for 10 years so it wasn't my first rodeo but it was my first 3v. If you prepare correctly it want be bad that and patience is the key.

Finally had a chance to change the plugs last week. I was able to get them all out with no trouble, it was definitely way past time to change them. However the miss after idling is still there.

If it's a coil pack it should give you a code. When I have had Ford coil packs go bad the check engine light came on shortly after I noticed the miss and will tell you which cylinder experienced the misfire. Maybe one of the coil packs is weak and on its way out? I would think at some point it would trigger a code.

If it is multiple it might not be able to figure out witch cyls are missing. A scan tool can show u witch ones are misfiring in live data.
