Long tubes flow better and out perform shorties. Only downside to long tubes is that it eliminates the stock cats and If you choose to do high flow cats you would have to relocate them making them illegal under federal emissions laws. That's not to say some don't get passed with LTs im just saying strictly 100% by the book there illegal/

What's the purpose of shorty headers? Do they make a difference in exhaust tone or volume?

Some claim they offer a deeper tone and they have some gains but generally cars now a days the stock manifolds flow just as well as shorty headers. So given the gains vs price most don't think it's worth it. And although the other mods you have will make a slight difference as well.

If you want maximum gains then yes LTs are the way to go. Although you'll need a tune to adjust the fuel tables as well as turn off the cel light from taking the cats off

Think of stock as shorties. Aftermarket shorties are a small improvement of flow and sound, but they collect into one tube right after leaving the heads. Long tubes have the single tubes running much further before collecting into a single tube, which is less restrictive. All mods will benefit from long tubes.
