To get 4.10 gears or not to get 4.10 gears?

I'm trying to decide if I should get 4.10 gears. I've never been to a drag strip, and don't plan on going. I might autocross later but that is at least a few years down the road. I just want to know if 4.10 gears will make my car more fun to drive? I already have a tuner, CAI, lowering springs, and axle back exhaust, is there anything else that would make my car more fun? Any input is greatly appreciated, and thanks!

I got a quote for $550 which includes ford racing parts. Does this fair? I've always heard that you should have a mechanic install them, is this correct. Installing springs on my car is the most difficult thing I've done so far.

For parts and labor? I'd say that's pretty fair. Make sure you're getting new bearings with the install kit!

4:10 is great for the drag strip. Personally, i think 3:73 is perfect

I'm doing the 4.10 v. 3.73 debate too. I'm leaning towards the 3.73 because I think it's a good balance between better acceleration and loss of top end. I have no plans or thoughts of taking Blue Heaven to the drag strip. Maybe just to see what I could do in the 1/4mi, but nothing on-going. Autocross is something I did with my '05, wouldn't mind doing it again in the '12.

I'm holding off on the gear change for now, mostly for $$ reasons. Just bought $2k worth of suspension upgrades, which will make the car more fun for me in handling. I also want to change over to the Whiteline Watts link suspension, and that involves changing the diff cover, so might as well do gears then too. Also want to put in 1-piece driveshaft, might as well do that at the same time too. So that's a chunk of change - $900 + $500 + $700.

Just bougth from AM:
- Ford Racing adjustable shocks and struts (w/GT500 strut mounts)
- SR Performance springs
- Whiteline: LCA, LCA Relocation Brackets, Adjustable Pan-hard, Adjustable UCA

Yea I'm going off to college next year which is why I'm debating if it's worth the $550. The school that I plan on going to next year will have lots of highway driving, but I feel that if I get 3.73 I will always question my decision. I'm planning on going to my first mustang meet on Monday, hopefully I will be able to get some more input there.

If you have a mt82 do not do 4.10's unless you car is setup for it. And KonaPony12 yours is not

Thanks Rap. Like I said, I'm pretty much over to the 3.73 side.

Just curious though, what do you mean by setup for them (the 4.10's)?

I'll definitely go with 4.10 if I change it. I'm just trying to judge if it's worth spending $550 on or if I should save the money for college. With as much support as the gears have gotten, Im definitely leaning towards getting them.

Suspension, and the ability to constantly rev to at least 7800.

And have the power up top

Suspension tires and rev it to the moon, if you want 4.10's.
If you don't adress everything to the "T" you will just spin

Rap I've got these 3.15s in mine and all it will do is spin lol. Of course we talked about my tires though. I have all BMR suspension parts but haven't changed my
Shocks and struts yet. Will adjustable shocks/struts help any with spinning?

Were you the guy with the auto? If so then yeah going 4.10s is stupid. 11+ Auto owners who go 4.10s are dum dums. Even the MT82 has a relatively steep 1st gear better suited to 3.73s and down. Having 4.10s with the MT82 is like having 4.30s in a 10-down car. Putting 4.10s in a 6R80... that's like a 5.1x rear gear in a 10-down car. Completely retarded.

No idea why in hell ppl do not actually look at their transmission gear ratios before blindly recommending a rear gear based on advice that is 10 years old.

That still doesn't mean anything ^

Get the gears based on your overall set up.

Most people get gears because they want their car to be faster. Best way to make your car faster is to get the gears which will work best for everything you've done.

No, it does mean something, you get the gears that is going to be the best for your setup. Unless you want a slower car.
