Legality of Hacking Car?

Ok, so I'm admittedly new to the car repair/modification world so this may sound like a dumb question.

I was read the below article on the legality of hacking your car and it got me wondering, is it illegal to use a tuner on your car? Obviously thousands of people do it every year and I plan on getting a tuner for my car in the near future. But I had no idea that it could possibly be illegal to use it on the car.

WTF! It Should Not Be Illegal to Hack Your Own Car's Computer | WIRED

Is it illegal to use a tuner and does it void the manufacturer warranty on the car?

Thanks

It is NOT illegal to tune your car. That article looks like it was written by someone who takes their car to the shop and believes every single thing the mechanic or dealer tells them.

I figured it was ok to use a tuner, or else they wouldn't be for sale all over the place. What about the car's factory warranty, is that affected by using a custom tune?

Depends on the dealer. But 99% of the time you tune your car and your warranty is gone.

It depends usually it will void parts of your warranty. For example If you load a custom tune and your radio breaks or paint starts chipping that will be covered. But if you load a bad tune and the engine blows ford is going to check the computer to find out what happened before replacing. They will see the modified tune and more then likely deny the claim.
