Muffler Position and its effect on sound?

I am debating getting a small muffler like flowmaster super 10s like another guy mentioned in a previous thread. These can be mounted as a mid or rear muffler. So two questions. 1) What effect does the muffler placement have on sound? 2) What is the muffler placements effect on drone?

Anyone know?

Mid-mounting is deeper and it makes the exhaust sound like it's coming from the pit of your engine vs actually coming from your tailpipes. It's pretty noticeable but it's not going to make or break a setup for you.

What I'm trying to say is if you like the way a midpipe/muffler combo sounds mid-mounted you won't hate it if it's mounted behind the axle.

Thank you sir. That is exactly what I am wanting a deeper Idol and louder exhaust note overall. I am doing this more for sound since I still have my stock cats not for performance so much.

what I was most concerned with is if I would notice a difference in sound between mounting them in the center of the car or at the rear of the car

Well mid-mounting will, in my experiences with the procedure, make the exhaust a tad bit quieter. This is really only done to change the tone and not the volume.

If you go with the 10 series flows you will be sitting pretty good. Get a catted H and call it a day. Otherwise mid mounting stingers with a off-road x pipe is another great exhaust setup.

With the 10s you will need cats or it will be painfully loud.

so would you recommend mid mounting the super tens or mounting them at the rear for the meanest sounding rumble l. Keeping cats ofc.

Definitely mid-mounting. It's a deeper and cleaner tone with really any setup, but especially flowmasters and other chambered mufflers.

Update! I will shoot a video as soon as I find a place with open road over these next few days. I live in big city so. The super 10s drone VERY bad on every highway I may move to the super 44s. I will make a video of the super 10s before I do though. They sound AMAZING but the highway drone is killin me lol

I did NOT mid mount them. The guy at the shop said I couldnt with the stock mid pipe. There was not enough room. He said he would have to hand craft a new H pipe and new pipes starting at the cats running to the 10s to do it. That would have been to costly. SO anyone wanting to mid mount super 10s keep this in mind.

Ive been using flowmaster outlaws axle backs and they sound ****ing amazing. But i was wondering if it might be possible to mid mount them if you cut off the tips and welded them up right. Anyone think it might be possible?

Like I said before anything is possible if you got the $$ to make it happen. You may have to have a custom exhaust crafted from the cats back to make it happen. Just like with the 10s

The shop charged me 100 bucks to hack up my stinger axle back and work it into a mid-mounted setup.

I highly suggest you find the opportunity, you won't regret it

Its because they have to hand craft a new exhaust system from the cats to the tail of the car to do it. The pipes have to be structured different ways then the stock system to do it. In this age of bolt on kits most shops do not or worse WILL NOT do that type of thing anymore.

Yes so I have the 4.6 Motor. Same as 05-09. I am having trouble finding clips on YouTube of 05-09 GTs with flowmaster 44s who do NOT also have headers and HAVE stock cats. Bec I just have a Airaid CAI.

I've currently got no space at the moment haha. Started with Borla S-Types axle-backs. Went O/R h. Couldn't stand the trumpeting, got Pypes M-80s mid-mounted impulsively (costed $100 like you). When I can get the $ I'd to go back to a catted midpipe with a brand new Borla catback but have the mufflers mid-mounted or just go with the touring mufflers behind the axle. FRPP cams really made the car much louder than anticipated.

Gotcha!

I couldn't find a catted H pipe for these cars so I went with the BBK catted X. Thinking about having my shop turn it into a H for me..

You can get just the s-type mufflers from jegs ( and probably other places) for a little discount over the axle back. Not to mention the labor you will save by not having the shop chop em up.

Is trumpeting when the exhaust goes "Bwwaaa"? If so, my pypes off-road H does that too.. :p Surprisingly, my catted X doesn't make that sound.

As requested here is the video.

I tell you after hearing this beautiful baby purr from OUTSIDE the car? I am thinking I may deal with the drone and suck it up. She sounds AMAZING! Friends tell me I am an idiot if I change it :/

Muffler Position and its effect on sound?

That's mounted behind the axle? That sounds really good and I'm not really one who cares for flowmasters on these cars... Too bad they drone really bad for ya, eh?

Edit: just saw you will be keeping those mufflers, despite the drone. I have to say I would agree with that call

yes it is rear mounted. I made a new thread to help ppl looking into Flows. The drone is not unbearable. Its also only at 70mph+ mainly bec I have an auto. These 4.6s do not drone like the 5.0s do really. IMO
