Nothing under 18" on a GT. End of story. It will destroy your handling. Also it will cause you to have that front end scraping sound as you go over dips in the road. Also make sure they are at least 18x8. 18x9 would be better.

You can not. 15x9 or 15x10 would be hard to find. I have never even seen a wide 15" rim. On top of that as I said it will destroy your handling. Height of the rim does matter. Anything over 18" is more for looks. But you want to have at least 18" rim. As I said 18x9 or 18x10 for "fat tires" The with of the rim MATTERS with tire size. The wider the rim the wider of tire you can put on it. With an 18x9 you can go up to the 285 area. With 18x10 you can even do mega wide 315

Is that because of the sidewall flex? I know for a fact that a 15" tire won't fit the front due to the brakes, and I doubt that a 16" would but I'm not 100% sure.

Also you should consider what your intentions are with the car. From my understanding you want more sidewall for drag racing and less for autocross type stuff. I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with cwwjr1681 I think you will be fine with 17" wheels. I don't understand how 1" could possibly make a massive difference. if it can please explain to me. If anything the smaller tire is the better handling tire because you have less rotating mass, but unless you a professional driver you will never notice. Now with the 17" wheel you might want to have a taller side wall to fill the wheel gap which will have additional sidewall flex, but again it won't destroy you handling. Obviously the wider the tire, the better, to a point. Some guys run up to 10" wide in the front And even wider in the back.
