Loud timing or cam sensors

I have serious bad idle and huge noise after warm up on my 4.6 2005 mus. gt. I think the sensor or electric plug or cam is bad. it runs fine most of the time. after driving and at idle it starts rattling loud and wants to stall. if i hold idle up, it clears up, if i let idle it gets bad again. has not done it on hiway, only street light to street light. please help. thank-you. also has 160k miles. Do i have to pull the heads to change the sensors?

To answer your question. You do not have to pull the heads to get to the cam position sensor. The valve cover comes off and the cams are exposed. The sensor is at the front. That may not be your issue however. Like what was said, I would check for leaks.

Start simple and work your way up, check for leaks and then take a look at the spark plugs.

Have a handheld tuner/diagnostics tool or know anyone with one? I had a small leak after installing my cams (which was fixed within seconds) but left a DTC my SCT X3 was able to read. That's where I would start, checking for DTCs.
