Installing Cams on 4.6 with no spring compressor?

Has anyone installed cams this way?

Most write ups ive read say you can do it without spring compressors just fine as long as you take the cam caps off slowly only turning each bolt on all of them a couple turns at a time. Should be safe.

You can but it is waaaaay easier and faster with the tool.
