A/C lost charge

Dad has an 06 GT and ever since he's had it, he has to every year have the A/C charged. He's been told there is a leak, but no one can seem to find it and they think it's behind the dash somewhere.

Any ideas? Is there something common with the S197s?

I would check all the valves under the hood. Refill it with one of those spray cans from parts store then check. Don't waste your money on "self sealing" refill. If you can get ahold of a detector you can see if some of those valves are not sealing properly. Mine had the same issue and one of the valves was a culprit. If it is the exchanger behind the dash, that's a big work order. I've heard of those going bad but hopefully it's something else. 06 GT

I could be wrong on this, but I think at least one mechanic plus the Ford garage ran some dye through it and couldn't find anything under the hood. Me being me, I wouldn't mind picking some up and trying it myself.

I've never messed with a/c before, that's my biggest hiccup. You'd think if it were behind the dash somewhere you'd still see some dye with a UV light?

Well I'm not familiar with the dye but I'm no expert. I have the luxury of a neighbor mechanic that has every tool. We used a gas detector on all the valves after a refill and found the problem. All we did is reset the valve and voila. If it is a valve leak you can detect it rather quickly. Also you can isolate the problem checking the compressor as well. My local advanced auto loans tools and that detector is one of them. At least you can determine the problem and take it to someone you trust if it's something bigger.

That's kinda what I had in mind... I'm just 60 miles away from his car and haven't had time to even think about it.
