Off road x-pipe pass inspection?

Hey all...I live in Texas and have to pass smog test in my county and I was wondering if I got the o/r x pipe would it still pass or do I have to get the catted version...what are the sound difference between the two set ups...thanks for your time and responses

Off road x-pipe will definitely not pass. Catted x-pipe may pass depending on how stringent that particular inspection shop is. I don't think there is much difference in the sound; they're still both probably going to be super raspy.

Some people in Texas have passed with it. I think it is a matter of finding a shop

It will not pass however that depends on who inspects you car. My mechanic flat-out told me he didn't care if my car had cats on it or not he'd still pass me.

Luckily we don't have too worry about that stuff in TN or I'd be screwed haha it has to be a hassle tryin to get that stuff worked out though I really feel for ya.. I know I'd hate to take my o/r x-pipe off for an inspection every time it came around.. If I could give any advice I'd probably not go o/r although I do love the sound of mine I don't have to worry about inspection time ever.. if you have to go threw the trouble of taking it off or finding the "right shop" to do it everytime id prolly get the catted version and not have to worry about it again, just my 2 cents

It is a federal offense to remove emissions equipment from a vehicle originally equipped with said equipment. Does not matter where you live. My buddy in Wisconsin got pulled over and a fix it ticket and only reason the car was not towed/impounded was because his mother worked for the Sheriff's office. And there is no emissions there.

So even if you happen to find a shop that passes you, you can still get shafted.

For a bolt on 3V you will lose zero to 1 or 2hp from a good set of high flow cats. Yes the cats quiet down the exhaust a bit.

Cliff's notes: If you are going to get inspected, you need cats. End of story.

Scotty is right, I've heard of multiple people being pulled over for unrelated things and being majorly fined for not having cats on their cars when the officer notices it. The situation can also arise from a noise violation

X-pipe would make it raspier, not sure about being louder though

X pipes and chambered mufflers generally don't sound great but cats will take some of the raspiness out. If you have the stock mid pipe then yes an aftermarket catted pipe would increase the sound level but not to the point where you piss of the neighbors.

If he is coming from the stock pipe it will be noticeably louder. But not too much so. Catted pipes and a nice rest of the exhaust are nice because you can tell the setup is aftermarket but its not just stupid loud/noise that so many ppl seem to think is always the end goal. Way too many cars with an OR pipe and Flowmaster 10s on stock suspension that can barely run a 14.

Would you all say the cut and clamp x pipe with stock cats or pay more for the high flow cats on the catted x pipe...i.e. Is it worth the extra money or not so much to get the catted x pipe...I greatly appreciate the info and input

Do not cut and clamp the stock cats... Just buy the UPR catted X and be done with it if you are on a mega budget. Its USA made and they use Magnaflow cats which are some of the best ones you can use.

Doesn't mean the car can't get a fix it ticket and impounded on the spot if you get pulled over by a cop having a bad day.

I forget off the top of my head. It would have been a lot more if they had impounded him because he would have had to pay for the truck and to get it off the lot. This was also back in 2005 so its probably different now. And this was in Wisconsin of all places.

He said the cop pulled him over because his car was too loud and then peeked under and boom.

Personally I would not run off-road without dummy cats.

I'm sure I will never have an issue around here. When we travel to Oregon who knows. With that being said I should have just got a catted one because I'm going to have to throw cats on anyways when I sell it.
