Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

Thinking about this shifter...

Hurst Billet Short Throw Shifter Mustang GT (05-09)

Any experience with this shifter? Is installing this a doable weekend project with common tools and common mechanic ability?

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

IMO the MGW shifter is the best but if you want the handle sticking out of the shift boot hurst is about your only option. Its a good shifter just not what I would want.

If you have any idea how to work on a car you should be able to do the install pretty easy.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I like either the PRO 5.0 or the MGW. PRO 5.0 if you want something that feels extremely sturdy and makes it almost impossible to miss the 2-3 shift. MGW if you want something that's a little less notchy and has a slightly more "comfortable" feel.

I have a MGW now and miss my PRO 5.0.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

A shifter is a pretty straight forward install. It will probably take you longer to pop the plastic trim off the interior than it will to swap the shifter out.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

Installing a shifter on the 05+'s is a very easy intall...it's 4 bolts that you have to remove...it will take about 45 minutes at the most...The 05+ GT shifter doesnt go directly into the transmission like previous generation shifter; it uses a long mechanical linkage assembly to do it, which is what tends to give the 05+'s a "herky-jerky" shifting feel...

I have a Roush Shifter in my Mustang...It has the shortest throw of any of the aftermarket shifter for the 05+'s...you can also get the long shifter handle like that one available for the Hurst Shifter...Really any of the top brands would give you a much stiffer feel with a shorter throw, including: Hurst, Roush, Pro 5.0, Steeda Tri-Ax, and MGW...

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I have the Steeda Sport. I got it from a Mustang shop in DFW. I was going to go with the MGW but the guys there said that the Steeda Sport was the best on the market. I haven't had any problems and it took me and my bf just under an hour and I did all of the under-the-car work.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

We've installed the Hurst, Steeda, and Roush shifters for the 05-09, and, our customers seem to be the happiest with the Steeda.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I have had my Steeda Sport installed since Christmas of 08 and I have not had any problems with it at all. It is smooth and easy to shift.

This is the store I got mine at here in DFW - Mustang Parts & Accessories Superstore - 1800Mustang

The guys up there are very knowledgable and helpful so if you have questions you can give them a call and give them what you are looking for and they can point you in the right direction.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I have a Hurst in my 07 V6. It is way better than stock but not as much of an improvement as I would like. I don't know about the others but the shifts are not as smooth and quick as I would like. The only thing I can compare to is a 66 mustang I put a 4 speed in with a Hurst shifter. could shift that very quickly, so I'm not sure if it's the shifter or the trans.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I LOVE the hurst shifter in the 05' up ones. its a positive shift and perfect throw for me. its gonna be a matter of opinion. if you see 05' -up owner with aftermarket shifters, ask if you can feel it (

Yea just go to the local ford dealer and ask to sit in or test drive the 05 Shelby GTs to get a feel for the hurst shifter

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

I have experience with the Pro5.0-on my`03 Cobra-a Hurst on my `03 MaCh1- and my current Hurst-on my fifth gen GT. Because I reused the lower boot-that I salvaged from the stock tower-and wiggled it down over the Hurst-there is zero rattle/ vibration. It shifts nice, looks great. I couldn't be more satisfied. I ordered it from FRPP-through the parts dept. at the dealer-and had it installed by my favorite SVT Tech. Because of how the new tranny is situated-and the fact that he had an electric lift-made it about a twenty minute install. (He had to loosen the tranny bell housing underbrace, and drop the front of the driveshaft, to pull the old one out-you used to just be able to "pull" them off the top of the tranny...) Good Luck!

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

Suffice it to say-a much simpler change to either of my two cobras. `Piece of cake in the driveway with the T56-`Not so with the Gen5 cars... That's okay-it looks a little more like a `68 fastback

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

Nope. Actually, the Pro5.0-on my `03 Cobra was the easier install-but it rattled a little bit-wasn't nearly as quiet as the stock tower. The `08 with the Hurst kicks butt. It is tight, doesn't rattle-at all-thanks in part to the linkage-and re-using the inner boot-from the stock shifter. It works great.

Re: Best shifter... Hurst? Steeda?

quite and sloppy are different things, the 05+ with the added linkage can never be as tight as the previous year that has the shifter right ontop of the trans~ its just the way it is
