2009 GT

Hello, I just purchased my first Mustang (09 GT, automatic-cause the wife cant drive a standard). Just two questions off the top of my head as I try to wait for this snow storm to clear out.

After reading through the owners manual I didnt see any mention of a "break in period". This may be a very dumb question but since I have very little mechanical knowledge is this something that is still practiced with todays cars? and if so what would you suggest?

Also being that I live in New England is it concidered bad or hard on the new engine to leave it running idle for extended periods of time to let it warm up in very cold weather? Just asking cause in the few occasions my wife may take it she tends to talk with friends while the car warms up outside (I've seen her do it for close to an hour before suggest she turn it off).

thanks in advance !

Re: 2009 GT

they really don't have a break in period any more on cars. but it is still wise to not drive it really hard till you get a few hundred miles on it. It is also a good idea to make the first oil change at 500 miles instead of 3k. to get the metal shavings out of the oil that build up in the first break in oil.

as far as leaving the car running for a long time. it only hurts your wallet at the pump.

It would do a lot more dammage to the motor to jump in and drive with your oil still sub 30* in the pan.

I'm originally from the upstate NY (Buffalo) area so I know why you need to warm your car up...do it...otherwise you are just asking for problems down the road.

Oh, and welcome.

Re: 2009 GT

always let it warm up if you can possibly do so, idle is perfectly fine.

the gt500s have a limiter on them till 500 miles not sure if this is to break in or keep people from beating on them at the dealership~

you are good to go new im sure no real break in needed as said above take it easy and change the oil a bit early the first time, I would HIGHLY recommend using a full synth oil vs ford semi synth.

Re: 2009 GT

welcome! congrats on the new GT. definitely let it warm up, your car and whoever is driving it will be a lot happier than way.

+1 on using a full synth. oil. i definitely think it's worth it.
