Question What should I do with My 65 I6?????

So first off hello and thank you for welcoming me to your forum.

I just picked up a 65 stang for $800 for my girl so I could trick it out for her. Then I got the car home and realized how complete it is and how much history this car has.

This car is an original Cali car with the yellow on black plates. It only has rust in the door corners and a little dent in the lower rear valance, which didnt even get the bumper.

Looking inside all the chrome is in place and everything down to the screws looks original. I opened the glove box and found the original owners manual with the first buyers info writen on the inside cover, along with detailed maintanance records from 1983-1996. And it came with the original keys with the Mustang on one side and the Ford emblem on the other.

Moving to the trunk, it has the spare tire with the original jack and hub cap. And on the trunk lid is the peice of paper with the instructions on how to use the jack. The only things I can see that arnt original are the trans, once was a manual now an auto, and the exterior color.

My question is do I cut it up and stuff a V-8 in it or do I sell it to someone who wants it for its history and authenticity?

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I would first find out if there is any under the surface rust and how much its going to cost to restore (to stock or your custom specs). They made a freaking TON of those mustangs so I wouldnt worry about cutting one up... but ONLY do it if you plan to do it and do it right of course~

If you feel this one is simply to nice then sell it for another one, but for 800 bucks it cant be in that perfect of shape, but it might have a bunch of hard to find parts.

I think a great project would be putting an 03/04 cobra drive line and interior in it.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I wouldnt say the car is perfect but it is very complete, straight and for the most part rust free. I checked the floor pans and trunk and there is no rust. Everything works, radio(needs a speaker), gauges, heater, lights. It runs great, very well maintained acording to the records. I would say the only real bad things about the car are ripped stock seat and dash cover(door panles kick panles handles are all in great shape) and the paint is ugly. I damn near stole the car from the guy. Im not a collector Im a modifier and thats what I got it for but I guess I just thought a Mustang, even though its an I6, with so much of the original equipment and docs would be worth something to a collector.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

You know, those inline 6's are hard to come by in fair shape with original parts. You can come across more 289's than I6's...at least in the midwest.

You might find the right person to sell the car for...at least more than the $800 purchase price. Rust in the trunk/floor pan area is common on those cars, and the first couple places for it to start. So being rust free in those areas is huge in my book.

Or you could drop in a big v8 and spruce up the exterior...it's up to you.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

A V-8 is what my girl really wants and I originaly got this car to drop a V-8 in it but it just seams like a shame to ruin something so original. Drove the car to work to day and it felt like I was in a time capsle. And let me tell you with faided red paint that has turned pink you have to be a real man to drive it. I will post some pics later tonight to give you all a better idea of what we are disscusing.

Thank you all for your input so far.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

Go ahead & put the v8 in it & save the original engine, wheels, etc & build a nice car. Properly store the 6 & you still have your documented car. But like spector V said those cars are plentiful.

you can keep it simple and drop in a 5.0 or 289 crate motor (carbed) but everyone does that

He should do something original. Like a stroked and blown LS2.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I have got a chevy 350 how hard whould it be to stuff that in? I also have a Ford 460 with a C6 but I think I would need an extra foot in all directions. Im thinking Im going to keep it, Im not sure I can find another one with a rust free body for a good price.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

If the car had an auto to manual swap I don't think there would be a lot of buyers that would see it as original.

I'd say drop a 428 in there (or just go V8 in general).

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I think the 460 would be badass, but like you said it's a much bigger engine that would need some serious modifications to fit, if it would even fit.

I'd stay with the Ford engine. A chevy engine doesn't belong in that car. It would be worth the extra time and money to stay with Ford. Have it apprised by a classic car appraiser. A good appraiser has an idea of what one goes for with certain features, they know what buyers are after. It doesn't hurt and tell the appraiser what you would like to do with it.

fyi, in a 64-66, anything bigger than a 351 will require cutting out the factory shock towers.

If the thought comes up to put a chevy motor in it, you need to just hand me the keys and walk away.

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

They are only original once. This car sounds like a great candidate for restoration as what it is, and wouldn't it be easier to do what you want with one of the many mustangs that already have a v8? It would already come with bigger brakes and other components you'd have to upgrade if you tried to put in a v8. You also can probably interest someone in a swap for a candidate v8 car you can mess with, or even just flip the I6 for a decent profit to someone who will respect its originality.

Really.. .being a 6 banger

If you sold it as original.. the buyer would just drop a v8 in it anyhow.. To put it in perspective

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I would definitely keep a Ford drive train in it. Do you want a Sunday cruiser or a pavement pounder? The old straight sixes go for ever, I kept my 67 a I6 just to have a nice simple cruiser. My 02 is for the fun! A Terminator drive train would be sweet in a classic Stang!

Re: What should I do with My 65 I6?????

I'm in the same situation...family wanted a project car...wife's choice..65 Mustang....found one already in mix of modification...they had dropped in a 302 v8 from orginal 6....didn't change out suspension, brakes, radiator or exhaust. My thoughts are to let your girl drive as is and let her 'feel the stang' out while she drives it around for a bit. There's a lot of modification's you would want to do for a V8 swap from a I6 to put it on the "safe-driving-daily-driver" specs, in my humble mind.....don't want to put my wife & kids in a powerful V8 without knowing it's safe-r. The car is built now for I6 power, not a V8's.
