Max performance

I just bought a 1966 Ford Mustang GT. This car has had some modifications. It curently has a 5.0L/302-with 345HP. I would like it to have better HP. What would you guys reccomend that I do to add to this, supercharger, turbo charger, bigger engine? If a bigger engine what size?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Max performance

are you looking for a pro touring car or drag car?If it was mine first I would upgrade the brakes and suspention then rebuild the engine stroked to 331 or 347 add a supercharger and maybe a small shot 50/75 hp drop in a T5 and get it geared to 4.10 add a four point cage and two racing buckets with five point harnesses good stereo system. But thats my plan and why its taking so long plus I dont mind the time or well way long down time because I knew goin into this it would take five or more years cause my stang is in lots o parts and has got some bad cancer spots.

Never driven a classic, so I couldnt tell you. Suspension and brakes are always a good upgrade on ANY mustang though, as they all tend to handle like minivans full of mexicans haha

Re: Max performance

My '90 makes my '06 feel like driving a frickin' Escalade or something.

There's a offramp on the way to Commerce that I take a good 15 miles per hour faster in the '90 than I feel safe taking in the '06.

What is the largest engine I could fit into my 66 Mustang? I am looking for raw horse power!

Re: Max performance

I imagine you could probably fit a 460 stroked out to whatever ridiculous amount of c.i. you could desire. You gotta realize thought that sometimes the "biggest" engine isn't the best way to make power.

If you want to make some real power... Go with a 351 Windsor based stroker with some AFR 205 or 225 heads and a blower. If you want more power than that... you are just sick.

Anything bigger than a 351W and you have to cut out the shock towers and go to a Mustang II style IFS or else it won't fit. Even with the windsor you have to get swap headers.

Re: Max performance

I say if you want a bad *** engine to go into a Mustang is building a Clevor block.

Clevor Engine: Mating 351 Cleveland Heads To 289/302/352W Blocks

Re: Max performance

Clevors are useless these days. The aftermarket for Windsor heads makes the idea basically obsolete.

It would be way cooler if you didn't have to spend $1500-$2000 on a front suspension first.

Well, I want to make my Stang a 10 second car for the 1/4 mile. So, how much do you think that will cost?

Re: Max performance

very true also, but you could probably build an equalyl performing 302 or 351 based engine to the 5.4 dohc for the same price, and then not have to worry about the front suspension, but I guess it all comes down to personal wants and how much "coolness factor" you want.

Re: Max performance

Build a 351 stroker and be done with it. A mod motor is a waste of time and money. A 351 Windsor stroked out to a 393 or 408 should run low 11s or high 10s naturally aspirated all day long.

Re: Max performance

What type of horsepower are we talking about with a 351 stroker? And would it help to add a supercharger or turbocharger to race the quarter in the low 10's?

Re: Max performance

You can easily make 450-500 rwhp without any type of boost (supercharger/turbocharger/nitrous). That with a good driver in a lightweight car that hooks up is good enough for 10s. Of course, it will always help to add some type of boost. You should be able to get a fairly mild boosted 351 stroker into the high 9s with the right suspension and supporting parts.

Re: Max performance

My buissness partner was building a 600hp 408 stroker with a 400 shot so you can get 1000 hp before the blowers or bo's with a help of the spray.
