It will fit with modifications.

I believe it will require some new motor mounts to be fabbed up and I think some fender wall tweaks as well. Other than that, it will go in just fine. I'm trying to remember what the guy had to do on the SN65 project to make the DOHC 4.6 fit....

Why not use the 5.0?
Edit: Missed the cheap part...

I just read some good info about this (4.6 into old mustang). I think it was in this month's HotRod magazine. Check it out. I believe the 4.6 is too wide to fit, but there are some companies that have kits available to help out the process.

A 4.6....even a 2V..... will not fit between the shock towers on a 64-66. You can get a MustangII style IFS, but they start at about $1200 I think.

Its build on a Terminator platform. |

Its build on a Terminator platform. | I know...but the point is, he made it fit. There are several others that have put the 4.6 in a 65-69 without using the terminator platform...it can be done. I just don't have all the steps they used in front of me.

A 4.6 will not fit between 64-66 shock towers, no matter how much you massage them, if you want a 4.6 you gotta say peace out to the shock towers and hello sawzall.

All I know is that there are 5 or 6 that I have read about that have stuffed a 4.6L into a 65-69 engine bay. Yes, it took a bit of massaging, but it can be done. It all depends on how ambitious you are.

What is the payout from all the work to swap a 4.6L in over a 302 or 351?

I think the oil pan will fit once you swap over to a Mustang II IFS, I honestly have never seen anyone swap in a mod motor without doing that. You may be able to make a mod motor fit without swapping out the front suspension, but I have never seen it.
Also, I hope it doesn't seem like I keep shooting down your project, I am definitely not, but where is the Painless Ford 4.6L harness? I can't find one on their website. I got the harness for my 5.0L swap from Ford Fuel Injection. It took me about an hour to install, it was a breeze. They have one for the 4.6, and its about $200 more than than 5.0L harness: RJM Injection Tech » 4.6L Telorvek Kits

A SOHC longblock is taller AND wider than a big block Ford, i.e. FE and 385 series big block(390/427, 429/460).
