"66 Mustang 289 smokes from exhaust and breathers

Hi,

I'm new here. Can anyone help?
I have a 1966 Mustang that runs crappy now. It smokes from the exhaust and both valve cover breathers. I pulled the plugs and some are oil fouled while 3 are nice and brown and clean.
Do i need rings or could this be oil leaking down the valve stem seals?

I only have 3,000 miles on the new heads, summit cam, edelbrock, holley, headers, flowmasters, pertronix, accel flamethrower. Top end was done professionally and it did great burnouts at first. Now sputters and smokes and backfires. I didnt do rings because there was no ridge on the top of the cylinders when I pulled the heads...you could still see the hone marks.
A fresh tune up didnt help anything.

Well it does sound like rings. In my opinion you should've whent ahead and done the re-ring kit because i'v seen it to many times that someone rebuilds the top end and the bottem end blows not to long after.

When did you start to do burnouts with it after you put the heads on, maybe the motor wasn't broke in enough to do stuff like that or just a bad batch of rings?

Thanks for your response.
I drove easy for 300 miles before spinning the back wheels. I only did the top end because it overheated and burned a valve when my son was driving it.
When the heads came off the cylinders were perfect with no ridge at the top so it appeared unnecessary. How can I tell if its just valve stem seals? Do you know?

Well if it is valve stem seals or if you think it might be go ahead and change them, you can do it without taking the heads off just buy a fitting that screws in the spark plug hole and put compressed air to it to hold the valve and take the sping off and change the seal. Just buy good premium seals so they last.

Thanks Straublittleman,
I didn't know that was how you hold the valves up.
I will purchase that fitting and try it.
Thanks again.

have a compression test done see if you have low compression (bad ring perhaps)
