302 or 351w?

I need some help. I bought an engine for my 65 mustang. The guy that sold it to me said it was a 302. When I searched the casting numbers through google it brought up a 351w. Cast number: c9oe-6015-c. I took of the valve covers and 302 is stamped on the heads? What do I have?

As far as I know the C9 means it is a 1969 motor the 302 stamping on the heads mean they were made after late 1967. Ford stopped making the 289 putting them in the Mustangs April of 1968 between late 67 early 68 the 289s had 302 parts in them then the 302 had the 289 left over parts in them until they ran out. With all that said it sounds like you have a motor with different parts then what it was made with. If you have a 65 do you have the supports that come from the firewall to the shock towers. If not you car started out as a 200 straight 6 and you will need to do some beefing up the front end. Check here to see your options http://www.mustangspecs.com/years/64-65.shtml
1968 Coupe <53000 miles on her 289 came off the line Jan 21st 1968. I bought it in 1983

Re: 302 or 351w?

look at the front of the engine where the heads mount the the block. If the deck height is even with the Timing Chain/Water pump passage you have a 302. If there is 1" from the deck to the water pump/timing chain cover you have a 351w.
