Numbers matching

How can you tell if the motor and trans is numbers matching?

Re: Numbers matching

I have heard the HiPo 289's had a VIN stamp, but I believe for most of the early year combinations, the closest you get is that date stamps are a reasonable amount of time before the build date. Casting numbers after the year of your car are a dead giveaway.

Re: Numbers matching

This link seems to have a lot of what you should know about numbers matching and lists some resources. I've always understood that the dates are on tags bolted to the engine, trans, and rear end, I think.

Alright... I went out this morning and found the block vin but the only thing is that the website didn't say was if the engine and body vin should be the same

Absolutely. That's the "number" in "numbers matching"!! Sounds like they aren't the same?

If its not a Shelby or a big block, probably no big deal to most hobbyists.

Does the inner fender match the door? Probably just an engine swap right?
