What can happen if i tighten my valve covers on to tight?

i have a 1977 mustang with a 302 and i took off the covers to clean them up. but i don't have a torque wrench, could anything happen to the engine or the valves if i make the bolts to tight? i did drive it and it sounded like it ran a little different after i put them back one so i got a little worried.

at worse you would have a oil leak where your covers sit on your heads and you could bend your covers. i would have them retorqued an just keep an eye on it for leaks.

cause oil leak and warpage to your valve covers,be sure to use some rubber gaskets, there less likely to leak unlike cork gasket, you really don't need a torque wrench just snug in a criss cross pattern, watch for leaks snug up some more if needed.

if you tighten them too tight you will have an oil leak , it will not change the way the motor runs

In addition to what the others said, let me add this. If you do the job over again, take your valve covers and turn them upside down. Put the flange against a smooth, flat, solid surface (I use 1/4 plate steel I have covering the top of my tool box) and using a small hammer with a slightly rounded face, lightly hammer the flange back flat around the hole where they distorted. This only applies to steel valve covers of course, not Aluminum.

If you overtightened your valve cover bolts, you could distort or even cut the valve cover gaskets and cause an oil leak.Nothing will happen to the valves if you overtighten the bolts.Just snug them down good and tight, use a little rtv and that will help them seal.Hope this helped.
