I wish you were my daughter.

I bought a 1965 convertible, 289 engine, white, all original when my daughter was born in 1979.

I bought it for her when she turned 16. I figured that would be enough time to restore it clean.

She never liked the car, she looked at it and wanted to know when I was going to get rid of it.

I sold it in 2003 to a friend for $5,000.

The 289 engine got (good tune up) up to 17 MPG on the hwy.
in town, it got somewhere around 14MPG.

Moral of story ---- Save your money, buy it, take care of it, and drive carefully. Remember it is a classic.

The gas mileage on a 40 year old classic Mustang is not very important when you are 16. Think about insurance, repairs, license, and initial cost on any decent convertible, before you worry about handling the gas cost at $5 per gallon. What did they teach you about car costs in Driver's Ed?

99% of 65 rag tops had 289ci 2V carb engines in them. You can look for 15,17 mpg from a well tuned car. Or you can buy an after market eltronic fuel injection kit from edlbrock and get 20,21 mpg. After that you could install a gear venders over drive and get 30,32 mpg. When that car was made gas was 26.9 a gallon so milage was not an issuie. I hope you understand that to get a nice #4 car you need about $35,000.00 or for a perfect #5 $60,000.00

It depend on the motor size. A V8 or a six. Around 15 to 18 and 16 to 20. It you keep it turn up. And a lot on how you drive.

It depends on the engine.
In line 6 will get 18-24 mpg if you drive it nice
a 289 or 302 will get 14-18 and maybe 20 if it has a 2 barrel carb
