Tachometer stops at 5 grand?

alright i bought a tachometer that will run with all cylinders. i have a 1978 mustang V8 and my problem is it idles at around 3 grand and changes some times which in my opinion it shouldn't be running that high (my original tach does not work). so when i rev the engine it will climb to 5 grand if i slightly increase speed but if i push it over 5, which i know it can it drops back to 3 and then you have to bring it up about another grand before it starts climbing again. and the weird thing is that the green wire is suppose to be hooked up to the negative side of the ignition coil but it does nothing if i have it hooked up to negative so i put it on positive and this is the result im getting. so could any of you mechanic geniuses help me out here

Shouldn't the tach wire be hooked to the negative side of the distributor instead of the coil?
