the spindle and entire assembly came out. The wheel hub, spindle. I jacked up the car and pushed it back in and it pulled fine and then it came out again. What holds the spindle in? Do I have to take the differential apart?

It sounds like you are describing the axle retaining clip coming loose and letting the axleshaft slip out of the axle tube. If this is the case, take off the diff cover and install a new clip on the bad side and carefully inspect all parts for damage. Expect future problems from that side's bearings and possible axle breakage from the stresses involved in this breakdown.
