351w Question? - Mustang Evolution

351w Question?

Hello all, I have a 1969 coupe and it currently has a 302 in it and I want to upgrade to a 351w in the future. I have a question. I have been told that pre 1973 351w motors are the best to try and get because the later years are choked down and don't make as much power. I was wondering if this is true? What are the best year motors to try and get or does it not matter?

all 351ws are good motors, the heads are all pretty much the same, though after 1976 or so they do have slightly smaller ports and valves. in the end its no big deal though as you can still make good power from a 351w. and if you dont like the stock heads then grab a set of aftermarket heads and make all the power you want. by the time you spend the money to improve the stock heads, you can buy a set of complete ready to bolt on world products windsor sr heads in cast iron, and for not much more you can get them in aluminum.

Alright thanks a lot yea I'm planning on getting a 351w and upgrading it. Better than my 302 even though it's making decent power with the bolt ons I have on it already

71-79 are the best bc the are a thicker casting

I heard 1969 was the best year for the strength of the block and then you can always get what ever heads cam intake and carb combo you want but make sure they all compliment each other.

Hey everybody, what would be the best heads for a 351w? The car is not a track car but I would definitely like it to have some power going down the road.

No 69 has a shorter deck

actually as i said all 351w blocks are good for building a healthy street motor. there is no "best" year, as they can all handle about the same amount of power before they split, which is north of 600hp for a stock block.

as to the best year for cylinder heads, the best ones for factory heads are the 69/70 heads.

AFRs are good, as are edelbocks, world products windsor sr, canfields, brodex, in fact pretty much all the aftermarket heads are good ones, i would stay away from those made in china though, they can be very good or very bad. personally i would go with either the edelbrock or windsor sr heads.

if your looking for good streetable power i would pick the afr 205. they are race heads but not too big to loose the reliable aspect.
