Problem with gas pedal.

So I started up my car today, and I guess it's always had this since I've had it.
Whenever I goose my gas pedal, there's almost like a second pause and the card engine picks up again. Could it be timing? Is there anyway to adjust timing to be proficient without going to a fancy shop? What can I do to not have to worry about this in the future?

Is the accelerator pump on the carb working? With the engine off, have someone step on the gas pedal. While looking down the carb, you should see fuel squirt. Doesn't take any tools to check.
