Heat soaked starter?

I got a 302 bored and with a bigger cam in it, any ideas on a good starter that won't get heat soaked with my long tube steel headers? I'm tired of getting stranded when I drive it to town. Anytime I drive it rather it be 5 min or 30 it gets the starter hott and it won't start, sounds really sluggish and will barely turn over, I replaced the neg cable, the pos. cable and put a heat shield on the starter and it still is giving me problems!!! Help!! This care is supposed to be the car we drive off in when I get married in 2 months and I have alot more stuff I gotta do but this is most important! If I can't start it I can't drive it!

Havnt had it tested yet, because it works great untill I drive the car for 10 min or so, then it doesn't want to, but i can start it anytime of the day if I don't drive it anywhere or leave it runnin for long.

Sounds like u r gonna have to change it anyway.

Most companies now days wanna rebuild starters and take urs as a core. They try to import them.

Since u have to take it off anyway, go ahead and take it to have it tested. It might turn good the first cool crank but after that, it stops. The heat shouldn't affect it that bad, especially since u have a heat shield around it.

Don't be surprised if u buy one from a parts store (if it is rebuilt) and it be bad. Make them check the new one in the store before u leave.

We changed my brothers and bought a new (rebuilt) one and it was bad. Went back, made them check the second one before we left.
