1966 horn button problem

As you are so good at answering my obscure little questions, here's another one.

The horn button on our 1966 Mustang won't stay on the steering wheel. No matter what I try I can't get it to clip on and stay there.

The button is a metal die casting which just seems to be a push fit onto a plastic ring which is mounted on three bolts and springs and has the horn wires connected. There are three small nicks in the edge of the plastic ring but no matching bits inside the horn button. Not matter what I have tried (short of using blu-tack) it won't stay there and just pops off again.

Is there some art to this, or am I missing some special clip, or what?

Re: 1966 horn button problem

Is it the wood grant steering wheel? If so, than you may have the wrong ring on there (plastic ring). If you bought the wheel and hub adaptor kit, it should have included 3 rings. I believe the notches in each are different. There should be one that matches th back of the button. It should be as easy as just lining the button up, and then just pressing it on. I would recommend unplugging the battery so your neighbors don't get annoyed. HTH.

Yes it is the wood rim steering wheel, and it was on the car when I got it. I have tried just lining it up and pressing it on, and you're right the horn does go off, but it just won't stay on, hence the question.

Re: 1966 horn button problem

It may 1 of a couple things. The 2 I think of are 1-that the plastic ring could be worn down, because that wheel could have been on the cars for a long time or 2-Someone might have put the adaptor for a different wheel on. Try changing the plastic ring. You should be able to buy one on ebay, or get an adaptor kit from your choice Mustang parts supplier. HTH

Re: 1966 horn button problem

Thanks for the advice, I'll try and track down a replacement ring.

Re: 1966 horn button problem

you can get a lighter and a screwdriver, heat up the plastic and push a little nick outwards on it, do this in 3 places around the ring, it makes sort of a small clip when you do this, then after the plastic hardens again, it should clip on and stay.
