67 289 dipstick question

Hello, my 67 (no longer running due to electrical problems I am at a loss for) has an oil dipstick that says "check while engine is warm and running in park" wtf is this about? Lol. It has an 8qt oil capacity I belive. When I went to chsnge it it started overflowing my catch that I use on my truck and poured all over the floor.

It is a mildly built engine. I put 7 quarts and it barely touches the dip stick

67 289 dipstick question

Sounds like the wrong dipstick. That's for an auto transmission. Why do you think it needs 8 quarts? Does it have a deep sump oil pan?

You definitely have the wrong dipstick Josh. That one that you are using is for the automatic transmission. Pull the one out of the transmission and see if that one is for the engine. They might have gotten mixed up.

Yes it does have a deep oil pan. The car has a built small black for racing with an aggressive cam. When I drained the oil it way overflowed the catch that I use for my truck all the time (5qrts)

I was thinking the same but the tranny dipstick says similar but a little different. I think the tranny one is definitely for the tranny

The one that you described is definitely for an automatic transmission. You would never check your engine oil with the engine running.

That being said, I wouldn't need any special dip stick with a larger oil pan would I?

No. The level of the oil remains the same. You just have a deeper pan so it requires more oil to get up to the same level as the original pan.

Gotcha. Thanks everyone for humoring my stupid question. I've found a billet dipstick for $32.99 they are proud of it lol. Although, with the end design if the engine bay I might as well just buy it now. Hmm
