200 engine

I am going to buy a 200 engine to rebuild and was wondering how to identify a 200 from a 170.

Re: 200 engine

there should be a casting number on the block. You have to get the number and look it up and it will decode everything. It will tell you where and when it was made, and it should also tell you what year and what vehicle it is from.

Re: 200 engine

The 170/200 sixes all look the same. The 170ci six has three freeze plugs in the block. The 200ci six has five freeze plugs and has a three-bolt water pump.

Re: 200 engine

As stated in the above post, count the freeze plugs , the 200 I6 will have 5 freeze plugs on the right side of the block.

A freeze plug is usually a round, dish shaped piece of metal, which is pressed into the engine block and the engine head. There are multiple sizes, and usually multiple locations depending on the engine, freeze plugs are located in the back of a head or block They may also be found on the sides of an engine, under an exhaust or intake manifold
A true freeze plug is an expansion plug located in the side of an engine block that is supposed to protect the block against freeze damage. Water expands when it turns to ice, and if the coolant does not have enough antifreeze protection it can freeze and crack the engine block. The freeze plugs are supposed to pop out under such conditions to relieve the pressure on the block.
