Finally did it. Chevelle vs. Mustang

I've been wanting to race the two cars for a long time. Fauther-in-law driving the chevelle and I driving the mustang.

Started off both cars in first gear at 25MPH. and.......

We both floored it on the third horn and the two cars stayed exactly side by side all the way to 100MPH.

Did it twice with the same results both times.

I kind of don't know who I should feel.

1 I have a 340 crank hp 06 mustang that keeps pace with a 500 crank hp old school muscle car. or.
2 I have a 500 crank hp muscle car that can't out run a 340 hp mustang.
:dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno:

I want to know what you all would feel. and don't turn it into a Chevy witch hunt.

I think it makes sense? Isnt the Chevelle alot heavier? After you figure Drivetrain loss on the Chevelle then your even. Drivers race from a dig...

IMO old school Pushrod horsepower is different than the numbers we look at today

that's what I was thinking. well really and truly I thought the mustang was going to beat the chevelle.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, you got the best of both worlds anyways...who cares if one should be faster than the other...I agree with the above statements though, the chevelle is probably heavier, and the parisitic loss is probably greater

well the dyno tune and the C&L racer intake that's siting in the closet should put the mustang back out front.

Also, if the mustang can hang with a 500hp chevelle, then it can hang with a lot of other old school muscle cars.

If the chevelle can't outrun, but hang with a 340 crank hp car, then it should beat a car with similar weight and less crank hp with ease.

when I removed the cats the car seemed like it lost power. and with no cats and the BBK TB now under part throttle I can hear the intake sucking in air. So I think the crappy K&N CAI is choking the motor down

and with the last round of tuning on the chevelle it's not a lot more peppy

Power delivery is so different between the cars, too..

My buick's and old 92 stangs 1/8th mile times were about dead even, but the stang hauled ahead by the end of the 1/4, usually by more than a full second - stang's trap speed is ~4-5 MPH higher than the buick's by the 1/8th too..

The buick puts more tq to the wheels than the rustang did, but the rustang had a LOT more overall power..

Sorry if that didn't make sense..

I just feel power delivery plays a huge part in how a car moves out, and depends on when and where a car starts running from...

... My 2001 GT is very disappointing down low lol.. 3.73 gears soon to come..

I would be surprised to hear that the Chevelle hooks better than the Mustang, given similar tires. The S197s hook like crazy. In my old stock '06 I could just nail it in first and not have to worry about tire spin just with the stock tires.

well on cold tires the chevelle can't hook. And the S197 doesn't hook on cold tires either with the 4.10:1 gears

They are both autos, not sure if switching would prove much of anything.

Louis, what gears are in the Chevelle? I know the GT has 4.10's, so that would definitely help it out some as well if the chevelle is running a lower gear set with it's additional bulk.

didn't realise they were both auto's, probably not much differnce, the gears might do it though...

GT= 4.10:1
Chevelle=4.11:1

the biggest thing is the chevelle has a TH400 trans which is a very heavy trans. and a 12bolt rear end which is the biggest rear end GM makes. I.E. the same rear end is in my 1 ton diesel dulley truck. but that's what it came with from the factory.
