No Gas Cap for Ford Cars in 2008?

Quote:
Have you ever forgotten to screw your gas cap back on after filling up at the pump? Or maybe you're one of the types that don't do the full three clicks that carmakers insist you should do? In any case, Ford is hoping to abandon the conventional gas cap in 2008, replacing it with what they call the "Capless Fuel Filler."

The plan is to throw this capless wonder in the 2008 Ford GT and Lincoln MKS initially, see how it fares in the real world, get some feedback from the public, and then deploy the technology on other models in the future.

The Capless Fuel Filler prevents gas fumes from escaping and maintains the proper pressure needed to avoid a Check Engine Light. They're saying that this is just one of the "tangible example[s] of how Ford is developing innovative product solutions to satisfy the unmet needs of consumers."

Right. Let's just hope this isn't yet another "innovation" that furthers the "Found On Road Dead" or "Fixed Or Repaired Daily" stereotypes.

I do. I think I have OCD pertaining to the Gas cap lol. I can sit there and put it on, walk to the other side of the car to get in and then start wondering if I put the gas cap on. I do it everytime. So I have to go back and check. Pisses me off.

Very good idea, ever since I crashed my car the gas cap no longer is boltedto the car with that little strap (i'm lazy) and I have lost 2 caps because I forget them at the gas station.

I've forgotten before. Even lost one of the caps on the Oldsmobile when I drove off with it sitting on the trunk. The TA has an attached gas cap, so you can't loose it if you forget to put it back on...which is good...'cause I've forgot before...

Oh, and as far as the gas cap goes...I would have thought they could have used the money invested in developing this "feature" and put it towards finding out how to make a sports car weigh less than and have a ride stance lower than an SUV. Oh well, there goes my laughing at the people who don't close up after filling up.

I have that happen every once in a while..... maybe once every 4 or 5 fills I'd estimate.

I'm with you on that. I guess they're tired of old technology that actually works and doesn't really deserve too much attention though.

I unbolted mine b/c I don't want it to dangle and scratch my truck, I am sure one day I will forget it.
