so my cousin wants a wrx....

ok, so my cousin wants an 04 wrx, not the sti, as they are too pricey for him. and i've looked at all the specs n stuff and they actually seem pretty fast. faster 0-60 than the gt and pretty close 1/4. believe me, ive tried to talk him into a stang, but he likes these. so my question is, how does it far with a gt? not liek were gunna race n shyt, just wanna know ur opinions on 04 wrx vs 04 gt, both stock. thanks.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

i personally like the WRX, if i wouldn't buy a stang and was gonna spend the same amount, i'd prolly buy a WRX.

WRX's are quick i just like the mustang better.........obviously

My buddy has one of the earlier WRXes. I think it's an '02. He ran a 9.1 in the 1/8th with just a few bolt ons.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

Theyre nice, but if hes looking into modding it past stock, he better get a tranny fund started, theyre glass even with stock abuse.

my buddy has a 20g and support in his 06 WRX, and it scoots pretty good. he was dead even with a bolton Evo MR on the freeway till they both shut down at 130ish, sadly though after they took off i was the chaser and they didnt pull on me at all, they put a quick bus on me but it stayed that distance afterwards(gotta love the long 4th gear). i wanted to run them both but we came up on traffic and each of us went our seperate ways.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

Tell him to get a Catfish, or a Fireturd if he doesn't want a Mustang. A base model Z28 isn't that expensive and they are actually faster than the SS Camaro's and T/A's from what I've seen. My guess is because their lighter. A LS1 Z should have no problem beating a WRX.

Better than a import I say.

BTW he really will be faster than you with a LS1 car so maybe you should tell him to get one. :hmm:

I have driven Newman's WRX and really really enjoyed it. It pulls like a mofo for a little car. He's done a few things to it but not much. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

This is true. Newman went through two stockers under warranty and then got an aftermarket one once the warranty ran out.

This is true, too. In completely stock trim, my WS6 will walk all over Newman's WRX. I haven't run one, yet, but I hear the STIs are a different story.

I have heard they struggle on high speed runs due to the AWD... a gift off the line but a curse once you get going.

I edited my original post. Newman's WRX is an '02 not an '03.

how much more boost over stock can the engines handle (not just take for a little bit before blowing up)

my buddy got his tuned at 17psi because the tuner would not tune above it, but my buddy thinks the tuner sucked because he "sees" people running 20-22psi all the time. i told him im pretty sure a tuner with the amount of racing experience he had knew more about tuning than a handful of forum whores.

whats their stock psi.. if its any where near that stock high they sure dont make much hp/tq for the amount of boost you pushing.

i think 12ish if i recall, but the stock turbo on the wrx cant even hold that to redline, and has horrid airflow numbers.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

WRX's stock are for autox'ing in my opinion. They are fast for 60' and that's it. I bet the one that ran a 9.1 1/8th mile probably ran a 14.6 or 14.8 1/4. The little turbos on those cars fall on their face at higher rpm. I'd get the STi(anything later than the 04 model, beefed up drivetrain and front to rear diff control) or EVO 8(as much as I'd hate to say it) over the WRX anyday. I know it's a little more coin, but it would be well worth it in the long run.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

id rather have the Evo over the STi, when you compare the two in terms of potential without major investment, the Evo is far better. from what i recall when my buddy got his tuned, the tuner guy was saying the STi motor was only a little more stout than the standard wrx in terms of how much power it could make before becoming a weak-link, and that either version should be used for what it was designed for, and that doesnt include straight-line only. he said he gets very upset when a person gets a STi and just drag races it, he felt its a waste of a car. but yeah, if i got a STi/WRX it would be built to turn with slight emphasis on speed/accel, however with a Evo it would be Straightline with slight emphasis on turning.

I have heard issues with the transfer case when autox'ing hard it seems they are best suited for off road autoxing, not on pavment etc etc.

Re: so my cousin wants a wrx....

How about a EG Civic. Throw in a B18C1 and a turbo and you'll have a quick little import that weighs much of nothing, in a solid chassis with double-wishbones on all 4 corners. But thats just if you wants a ricey import car.

if you put nothing on it then its a *** kicking import, theres a crew of 4 around here all 4 of them are 10 second hatchs, its nice when noobs go to the racing spot and think its another honda, believe me lost a 100 bucks that way

Oh yeah, still under warranty, but 2 broken CV's, a burnt 3rd, and a nasty CPS problem later....and in all honesty, he really doesn't drive it any worse than most.

hrm, my buddy abuses the piss out of his, as do most of the other srt4 guys in our area and the only problem they have all had was the TPS sensor, because the harness is too short and when the engine moves it pulls the wires out of the plug. its 150$ if you dont have a warranty to get the extended harness, or 3$ if you can cut a wire, add some more wire, solder and shrinkwrap, that is, however, if you do it yourself before it becomes a problem, once the wires pull out of the plug your screwed and need the extended harness anyways.

Yeah, at first we didn't believe he wasn't just thrashing it every time he drove it, but we have seen him around and others have too and he really isn't all that hard on it considering I guess. Maybe he got a lemon, but I wouldn't have bought the roach anyway. Certainly not now.
