High RPM's during emissions test

Just bought a supped up 1990 mustang GT 5.0. I just took it to get a state inspection and it failed. It ran 882 rpm's while idling. The max is 220. So I am way over. I just gave it a oil change and put on some magna flow cats. The only other problem I have had with it, is that it stalls repeatedly while in idle and in first and reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a manual 5 speed. Do you think it might be the head gasket. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm with svtlx on this one. If that's all it's doing is idling high and not running rough or anything its most likely the IAC motor!

Re: High RPM's during emissions test

The engine does run a little rough and there was some smoke from the tail pipe. I would say it was a little on the black and white side. The engine is not the original, the engine in it right now has only 30000 miles right now.

For a manual tranny it should idle at 650-720 rpm's. 220 is to low and most gas motors won't even run it that rpm, my starter on my car spins the motor faster than 220 rpm's. If the guy at the shop told you that then he lied and he his a dumb @ss.

Did the shop take and consider the mods to the motor during the test, If it smokes black that means its running rich. The little bit of white ish smoke could just be steam from the exhaust wich is normal.

With the motor warmed up to temp it should idle at 650-720 rpm's might as well say 700 rpm's. But if it has a big cam or anything like that it might be hard for it to do that.
